My genuine first reaction to learning what transgender means:

I was in my early teens, attending a fun summer camp that had many activities divided by girls/boys.

During lunch, I befriended a couple kids, a nice girl and a nice boy. The boy mentioned something during a girls' activity.

Me: wait, I thought you were a boy?

Him: yeah, but I'm trans

Me: what's that?

Him: it means I was born with "girl parts" but I'm really a boy

Me: oh ok

Continues in the conversation as we were

Later, I notice him having to participate in the girls' activities like he said, and out of curiosity, go up to one of the adult leaders to ask why he has to be with the girls when he's a boy

Adult: oh, she's not really a boy.

Me: but he says he is?

Adult: we don't believe in transness. If you're born a girl, than you're a girl, and if you're born a boy, then you're a boy, and that's final.

Me: but that doesn't make sense. If he says that he's a boy, that must mean he's a boy, right?

Adult: no, your gender is the same as your biological sex. Do you understand?

Me: no??? That doesn't make any sense???

It didn't take long for the adult to dismiss me in a huff, while I'm left extremely confused.

That was before I learned about the existence of non-binary genders, and I just thought it was really cool. It didn't confuse me at all!

Nowadays, I've had to explain being trans to young kids, mostly cousins, a fair amount. Even with my tendency to over-explain things, it's not that hard to grasp. Every time, it only takes a couple minutes at most to explain, then they move on or ask questions that I'm happy to answer. Some have never heard of it before, while others have and thought of it as "changing your gender", which is a reasonable conclusion to make when no one's educated them about it.

You know what I've found always confuses kids? This "biological sex is absolute" nonsense. It doesn't make sense to anyone who's still learning about the world, it has to be indoctrinated the same way religion is.

So get the fuck out of here with this "trans identities are confusing" bs. Just like every other bs excuse for bigotry that we all know has zero real basis in science.

Kids are learning new things about the world around them every single day. Everything is going to be confusing until it's adequately explained, or they've had time to figure it out. "It's confusing" has never been, and will never be, a reason to stop anyone from learning new things.

Church Participation of Individuals Who Identify as Transgender

GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR LOCAL LEADERS

This document supplements the policy in General Handbook, 38.6.23, "Individuals Who Identify as Transgender." Its purpose is to help local leaders counsel with individuals and their families about certain aspects of Church participation.

General Guidelines

In all cases, local leaders:

• Seek spiritual guidance.

• Treat individuals and their families with love and respect while teaching gospel truth.

• Consider the needs of the individual and other ward members.

• Ensure that the Church's doctrine on gender is not undermined or misunderstood.

• Seek counsel. Bishops counsel with the stake president. Stake and mission presidents seek guidance from the Area Presidency.

• Involve the parents or guardians of minors.

Preferred Names and Pronouns

Official Church records reflect a member's biological sex at birth.

The use of preferred names and pronouns should be a matter left between individuals and their family, friends, and Church members. Local leaders should not determine or prescribe how members address an individual.

If a member has a preferred name, it may be noted in the "Preferred Name" field on the membership record.

Gender-Specific Meetings and Activities

Individuals attend gender-specific meetings and activities that align with their biological sex at birth.

Any exception, which should be rare, must adhere to the "General Guidelines" listed above and be approved by the Area Presidency.

Overnight Activities

For overnight activities that are for a specific gender, individuals attend only the camps that align with their biological sex at birth. Examples of such activities include Young Women camps and Aaronic Priesthood quorum camps.

For overnight activities that are not for a specific gender, individuals who pursue surgical, medical, or social transition away from their biological sex at birth leave the activity at night. Youth are released to the care of a parent or legal guardian, who is responsible for arranging accommodations. Examples of activities that are not for a specific gender include young single adult conferences, For the Strength of Youth conferences, and youth conferences.

Callings and Assignments

Individuals who pursue surgical, medical, or social transition away from their biological sex at birth are not called or assigned to (1) fulfill gender-specific roles, (2) serve as teachers, or (3) work with children or youth. They may receive other callings or assignments that provide opportunities to progress and serve others.

Restrooms in Church Facilities

Restrooms should provide a private and safe environment. Care must be taken to respect the privacy and dignity of all individuals.

Individuals who pursue surgical, medical, or social transition away from their biological sex at birth should use a single-occupancy restroom when available.

If a single-occupancy restroom is not available, a local leader counsels with the individual (and the parents or guardians of a youth) to find a solution. Options include:

• Using a restroom that aligns with the individual's biological sex at birth.

• Using a restroom that corresponds to the individual's feeling of their inner sense of gender, with a trusted person ensuring that others are not using the restroom at the same time.

I really need y'all to understand that answering to transmascs who complain about being invisible "yeah but see, transfems are being actively murdered so you have it easier" is batshit. Because one of the hardest part of being invisible is that transmascs are, too, being actively murdered, but we don't know who the victims are, if we even know it happens at all.

One time I got told that transmascs don't deal with homelessness and involuntary sex work and when I said that every transmascs I know have dealt with both in one way or another, myself included, I got told "that's just your surroundings, in a grander scheme that's false". How fucking cruel can you be ?

You think I don't see trans men and transmasc people scattering newspapers and the web every year during TDOR because the ones we lose are almost never on the fucking lists ? And we should be happy and glad we don't know about them ? It isn't bliss to live knowing that if some of my friends die they'll most likely be misgendered and you can't do shit about it. It's not peaceful to see how trans men and transmascs' deaths are always downplayed, treated like it's not the Real Brutal Deaths that deserve to be adressed (and don't tell me nobody says that, I've been in queer spaces long enough).

At this point, talks about "mutilated bodies" tell me everything I need to know about people's politics. I truly don't believe you can combine the idea of mutilated or degenerate bodies with anything even slightly progressive in terms of autonomy. Hey, can we talk about the violence against queer natives for a second?

Nex Benedict was a 16 year old nonbinary student who was brutally murdered by three of their female classmates. Not only that, they were a Native American living on a Cherokee reservation, though not enrolled in the tribe, and their actual heritage is that of Choctaw.

Their death was not properly reported on until the blog post that genderkoolaid shared was made. Their nonbinary identity had remained unacknowledged, and it took even longer for their native one to be.

They were a victim of the rising anti-trans rhetoric spreading throughout places like the US. They were beaten in a bathroom after Oklahoma had banned trans people from restrooms, designating them to only use that of their assigned sex. Nex was attacked in the girls bathroom.

A native, two-sprit, nonbinary teenager. Whose identity and the actual circumstances behind the incident, a hate crime, wasn't even published beforehand. They died tragically, a death that could've been easily prevented.

Do you know how scary that is? I'm just like them. A native, two-spirit, nonbinary teenager. I have to keep on hearing stories of people my age, who live in the same country, who share my identity, getting murdered. Not even just murdered, but erased.

I know for an absolute fact that if I died tragically, who I am will not be remembered. My deadname will be on everything. I would not be counted in trans statistics, nonetheless statistics on transmascs. My identity would not be respected. My native heritage wouldn't matter. I didn't get to be enrolled. And Nex had supportive family and friends, people who stood up for them. Not all trans kids get to have that.

I've had to think about this before many times. From the other trans youth deaths I've seen. From nearly becoming one of them. When is it enough? Why do the people in power do nothing to stop kids like me from being killed? Why do they only want to make our lives worse?

I'm very lucky to live in a state that has not wavered on it's protections on LGBTQ+ residents. Though I am reminded often that that can easily change, if things keep going like this.

I could've easily been them. I can still easily be them. There are many other kids who can be them. Everyone should be doing more to protect trans youth, and protect queer natives. We're so often forgotten about. I'm part of small tribes, and tribes who barely even exist anymore. My elders desperately trying to keep it alive. Please do not erase us. I'm queer, I'm native. Nex Benedict should have been protected, youth like me should be protected. I wish the best for their family and I hope their memory is never forgotten.

What I've seen people fail to mention is that Nex, after regaining consciousness, went to the nurse’s office who then refused to call an ambulance. Their death is also due to the negligence of the school.
